Spodoptera litura is an ubiquitous, polyphagous, multivoltine, lepidopteron pest that feeds on 112 cultivated crops across the world. It is an important pest of agricultural crops in Asia, Australasia & Pacific Islands. The main crops species attacked by Spodoptera litura in the tropics are cotton, groundnut, pulses, maize, rice, castor, soyabean, sunflower, jute, tobacco, colocasia, tea & vegetables like capsicum, cucurbits, bean, potato, sweet potato, tomato, brinjal, greens, banana etc. Among the major crops Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) is also subjected to the affections of Spodoptera litura. The larvae survives best on Vigna unguiculata [81.6%]. Cowpea is considered as a poor man’s food as all the parts of the plant is edible and high in nutrient too. Therefore the affection of pest inhibits the growth & yield of the crop.
