Zea mays, more commonly referred to as maize, is a member of the grass family Poaceae.(1 ) Maize is cultivated globally and its is considered as the third most important cereal crop next to rice and wheat in the world as well as in india. Maize is satisfies the human nutrient requirement and is also considered as an important raw materials for animal feed and manufacture of many industrial products such as starch , maltodextrins ,oils, syrup and products for fermentation and distillation industries . Due to its immense potencial and versatility it was nicknamed as “miracle crop” And “queen of cereals”.In India ,its cultivated over a area of 9.63 million hectares and with a production of25.89 million tons with an average yield of 2680 kg ha-1 . In Tamilnadu, Maize is cultivated an area of 0.31 million hectares, production of 0.95 million tons and with a productivity of 3026 kg ha-1(indiastat, 2017-18)
